Back In The Day: Public Enemy

May 25th, 2008 · No Comments

Nowadays in Hip Hop we have the term a ‘conscious rapper or MC’ but over 20 years ago, a group known as Public Enemy revolutionised conscious Hip Hop forever.

Chuck D and Flavor Flav

Consisting of the lead MC, Chuck D, partner Flavor Flav and fabolous production from the legendary Bomb Squad, PE became one of the most definitive groups of all time. It was at Adelphi University in Long Island where Chuck had been DJing and there he met Hank Shocklee and Bill Stephney.

They all had a passion for Hip Hop and politics and they became close friends. Soon Def Jam co-founder and producer Rick Rubin heard a Public Enemy demo tape and signed the group. The rest was history.

Chuck D and Flavor Flav - Legends

For over 20 years, Public Enemy have continued to remain relevant. From their debut release, ‘Yo! Bum Rush The Show’ in 1987, they had cemented their place in music’s Hall of Fame.
