King Tech on the formation of Ursession

Sway and Tech

I was with RZA one night, and he was like, ‘I’m working with this kid from System Of A Down, Shavo.’ And I gotta be honest with you man, my rock knowledge is zero. I’m a straight hip-hop dude … He seemed like a cool cat. [A couple of days later] he called me like, ‘Come up to the crib tonight. I’m recording some shit … he was doing his vocals for some song … and I was just sitting there, and I was like ‘Dude, this is what I do every day.’ I’ve been in the studio with Jay-Z, Lauryn Hill, Nas, Eminem… you name it – I’ve worked with them cats. So I was like, ‘I know how to do this.’ So I got on the board and I’m like, ‘Look dude… What you wanna do when you do a hook, how to make it sound big … Dude was kinda doubting me. One of his boys goes in his ear and whispers ‘This is King Tech, from the Wake Up Show …

… the dude runs to his iPod, and tells me that one of his favorite records of all time was “The Anthem” from ’99 with all those emcees on it. People always think RZA had produced that song because I let him use the same beat – I gave him that for his album too. So he was like ‘Yo, dude… that’s you?’ Then he was like, ‘Fuck it, dude – tell me how to do my vocals.’ And we did a joint, and it came out bananas … a couple of weeks later we start talking about what artists need, what’s lacking on the Internet, and he was like ‘This guy Narb is talking about doing something.’ I called Sway in NY and said ‘get to Cali when you can, we got something here.’ So we all got together, urSession was formed, and it was our way of saying, we wanna make a website designed for talent and artists from electronica and pop, country… whatever your specialty is, we wanna get you up there.

And that’s how the whole 100K Battle thing came about. We sat around and I said, ‘Look, I talked to a few of the producers, and I don’t know what these cats charge for beats, but I got about a half a million dollars’ worth of beats up here! The Avila Brothers have won four Grammys; they make $35,000 to $55,000 a track … People outside the music business don’t understand why Jay-Z pays $75,000 a track. It’s 28 beats by 22 producers. Some people turned in two or three beats. I wanted to make sure the 22 beats didn’t sound the same.

Sway On The 100k Competition

Sway

When we first came in the business, we had a hard time breaking into the industry through conventional means. Back then you didn’t have the Internet. You didn’t have the online communities that people have now that give them exposure on a global basis to be heard and be seen, and for people to hear their music and break their music like what we do now, so it was a lot harder to break into the industry.

Because we work on TV and we still work in syndicated radio, we’re approached by a lot of people for help, for breaks, to open doors. The industry has been shrinking recently in the conventional fashion, major labels are consolidating, radio’s narrowing their playlists - it’s getting harder for the independent artist.

So we felt that although there are other online communities and social networks out there, there weren’t any out there that we felt had credibility that targeted and focused on independent artists, which is why we formulated urSession

This is what we’ve always done with the Wake Up Show. The Wake Up Show freestyles. Not for nothing, those freestyle CDs put a lot of dudes on the map. And we paid dudes to be on those CDs. These DJs now charge motherfuckers to be on their tapes.”

Thank you for the post. This is a good look. Perhaps more people will step up to the plate and offer interactive contest to assist emerging recording artist. For additional information on the music business visit http://www.gomusicconnection.com
